A private place to talk about losing someone
Someone you loved has died, and the world kept going. Maybe there are things you never got to say. Maybe the people around you have stopped asking, or you can't quite talk to your family about it. Grief doesn't keep to a schedule, and it tends to come back at ordinary times.
Ember is a private place to talk about a loss with an AI, by voice or text, at any hour. It listens, remembers what you said, and knows how grief went for people who lost someone too: what they held onto, what helped, and what still hurts. It won't tell you how you're supposed to feel.

What people who lost someone asked
Every situation people keep coming back to has a public page on Ember, where you can read what the people there asked and how it went for them, drawn from what they went through and never with anyone's name or words. A few of the ones about loss:
- Grieving the death of a mother — "How do I live with what I never got to say?"
- Grieving the death of a father — "What surprised people about how they grieved?"
- Grieving the death of a long-term partner — "How do people get through the nights and the empty house?"
- Grieving the death of a spouse after a long marriage — "What do people struggle with most in the first year alone?"
- Grieving the loss of someone close — "Does the grief ever get lighter?"
- Grieving the death of someone close — "What small objects or rituals do people hold onto?"
- Feeling profoundly alone after losing loved ones — "Why do friends stop calling after someone dies?"
- Anticipating the loss of aging parents — "How do people carry grief for one parent while still caring for another?"
- Fearing the loss of a loved one to serious illness — "How do people keep going while waiting for uncertain news?"
- Grieving the death of a beloved pet — "What do people do with sudden waves of grief later on?"
How talking to Ember works
- You talk, privately. Start wherever it starts: the last conversation you had, the day they died, the empty chair, the thing someone said at the funeral.
- Ember listens with what others lived. Behind the conversation, it draws on what people who lost someone went through, so it can ask what they found themselves asking and tell you how it went for them.
- Stories, only with a yes. When someone who lost someone close has said yes to sharing, Ember may offer you their story to read. You choose.
- People, when you're ready. Later, if you want, Ember can introduce you to someone you'd get along with, or to a small room about something you love. Nothing you said to Ember is shown to them.
Once you've said enough, Ember writes it into one clear page in your own words: your Ember. Some people use it to keep what they remember.
What Ember is not
Ember is an AI. It isn't grief counseling, therapy, or an emergency service. If grief has turned into thoughts of harming yourself, you don't have to explain it well or be sure it's serious enough: call or text 988 any time to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. If you're in immediate danger, call 911.
Is it private?
Nothing you tell becomes a public post. No one can read your Ember unless you separately say yes. Read exactly how privacy works on Ember.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an app where I can talk about grief privately?
Yes. Ember is an AI you can talk to about a loss by voice or text, on the web, in the Ember: Talk It Out app for iOS and Android, by phone call, or by text message. Nothing you tell becomes a public post, and you can start without an account.
I can't talk to my family about it. Can Ember help?
Ember is a place to say what you haven't said to the people around you, at any hour, in whatever words come. It listens, remembers, and knows how it went for people who were where you are.
Does Ember tell me how to grieve?
No. There isn't one right way, and Ember won't decide for you. It can tell you what people who lost someone found, and what still hurt.
How is this different from a grief forum?
You don't post anything or read through threads. You talk privately, and Ember brings you what people who lost someone went through, and, only with their yes, one person's story.
Does it cost anything?
Ember is in beta, and we’re starting to test subscriptions with some new accounts. Most accounts aren’t asked to subscribe. If yours is, you’ll see it up front — $9.99 a month after a free trial, and nothing is charged unless you choose to subscribe.
Is Ember grief counseling?
No. Ember is an AI, for one person to talk things through. It isn't counseling, therapy, or an emergency service.
You don't need the right words. Say the part you keep coming back to.
