The Bill Between Us

I gave everything. It still wasn’t enough.

I had been chatting with someone on a dating app for a long time, until I felt we knew each other. We decided to meet for lunch at a restaurant. I went into it thinking the meeting might reflect the connection we had built online.

After we ate, she left without saying anything about the bill. I paid for the whole lunch, but I wasn't sure that I should have. Since we were meeting for the first time and didn't live together, I thought we might pay separately. What bothered me most was not simply the money. She didn't offer to split it, and afterward she didn't say anything about it—not even a thank-you. We still chat as usual, but I keep wondering whether I was expected to pay everything, or whether we should have paid one by one.
