The Exhaustion of Guessing

I gave everything. It still wasn’t enough.

I’ve been alone for a few years, and I wanted to find a girlfriend. I tried different dating apps and kept putting myself out there, but I felt tired. It was hard for me to speak to a stranger woman, even through a screen, and online chatting didn’t feel like a good way to connect.

I like camping, reading books, and playing guitar. I tried meeting people through those kinds of interests, but the same difficulty followed me. It was very hard to walk up to someone or speak directly to a stranger woman.

What exhausted me most was not knowing what the other person wanted. Some women might not really be looking for a boyfriend; they might only want to chat, or might be trying to earn money. There seemed to be so many possible purposes, and I was always tired from guessing what she was thinking.

The idea of becoming a friendly regular somewhere, without putting pressure on myself to find a girlfriend immediately, made sense to me. Maybe connection could begin more slowly, through something I already enjoy, instead of through the constant uncertainty of a dating app.
