Today, while I was out with my daughter, I saw a mother speaking loudly to her daughter. The girl was sitting on the street and looked upset. It seemed they were having a quarrel. The mother was trying to force her daughter to understand something, but the girl seemed unable to hear anything anymore. She only wanted to be alone and quiet.
Then the girl said loudly, “Mom, don’t say again. Don’t say something to me.” I could feel how hard the mother was trying to communicate, and how completely the girl needed the talking to stop. They were both there, but they could not reach each other.
My daughter did not say anything. She does not like seeing people fight or quarrel. Watching that scene made me think about how difficult it is for parents and children to understand one another these days. I still have no answer for how we can communicate with our children, or how we can educate them. It is really hard to see.
