Boston is still my favorite city in the United States. I did my PhD there, in an area that was very quiet, and I remember the cold winters, the heavy snow, and the way families came outside in the morning to clear it. Snow could be trouble, but it was also lovely—a shared way of living, shaped by four very different seasons.
I also loved Cambridge. I would see professors running along the Charles River in the morning, and the image stayed with me: a person trying to develop a great mind, great knowledge, and physical strength at the same time. It made me think about how strong a human being can be.
Every fall, my friends and I went to the mountains. Some were new friends from graduate school, and some were people I had known since my undergraduate years. One year, we left at five or six in the morning just to watch the sunrise. The mountains were full of color, like an oil painting, and the morning felt beautiful because we had gone there together.
